This website gives health professionals access to information about blood and blood products, from donation to transfusion and beyond.

The site includes the Transfusion Medicine Manual, which contains more detailed information about blood products and clinical practice. Access the Transfusion Medicine Manual using the blue tab at the top of this site, or the navigation button at top left.

The Transfusion Medicine Services team at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS) provides transfusion medicine consultancy services covering patient care, transfusion adverse events, existing and new product information, appropriate product utilisation, hospital inventory management, advice on consent and risk, valuable resources and other useful information

Research and Registries

Transfusion Medicine Services at ARCBS participates in clinical research in collaboration with other leaders in the field. 

A number of strategic clinical research collaborations with partners like Monash University and several tertiary hospitals have been established, while other projects have been undertaken  by members of the Transfusion Medicine Services team.

Leucodepletion of Red Cells and Platelets

We are pleased to announce that 100% of all red cells supplied by ARCBS nationally are now leucodepleted.

Approval of Biostate® for treatment of von Willebrand disease

Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved CSL Bioplasma product Biostate for use in bleeding episodes in patients with von Willebrand disease, effective 28 August 2008.
