New transfusion tools and resources from the Blood Service

The Transfusion Practice and Education team has just released some new resources and tools to assist with improved patient blood management including a Patient Blood Management Committee handbook, Transfusion Q&As to help prompt transfusion and patient blood management knowledge, and adverse event eLearning and bedside resources.

Transfusion Q&A

Make sure your transfusion and patient blood management knowledge is up-to-date with quizzes you can take online or have sent to your mobile or tablet at intervals of your choice.

Topics start at basic level blood component knowledge, running through to more complex questions tied to your knowledge of PBM guidelines.

Enrolment gives you eligibility for professional points, or you can take the quick quiz online if you want to check your knowledge in a topic area, but don’t need points.

You can enrol via our online learning area, or you can source it from the home page of transfusion.com.au.

Patient Blood Management Committee Handbook

The shift from a one-size-fits-all transfusion approach to individual, patient-centred blood management has seen Hospital Transfusion Committees (HTCs) evolve into Patient Blood Management Committees (PBMCs).

These committees play a critical role in ensuring that blood products are used appropriately, safely, efficiently, and effectively, in accordance with national guidelines and standards.

PBMCs will also be a key driver of change as patient blood management principles and strategies are adopted by health providers.

The Blood Service has created a simple e-book to assist PBMCs with ideas about their structure and activities, with a rich resource of links to related materials and initiatives.

The Patient Blood Management Committee Handbook is a downloadable toolkit, available to download from the Transfusion Resource Centre on transfusion.com.au

Simon Benson from the Transfusion Practice and Education team at the Blood Service worked on this resource with Ken Davis (during his time as a Blood Service Fellow), Simon will be presenting at Transfusion Update, so please feel free to ask him about the PBMC Handbook during the conference.

We will also have the handbook, as well as some of our other resources on show through our learning posts at Transfusion Update.

Adverse events tools

We’ve just released a new e learning package for adverse events, supported by an app to assist with bedside diagnosis and decision-making.  You can find the eLearning package in our Online Learning area, and the app is in our Transfusion Resource Centre on transfusion.com.au. You can also order adverse events lanyard cards at clinicalinfo@redcrossblood.org.au

How much blood?

This one’s a bit of fun, using height and weight calculations to calculate the amount of blood in your body, then shows blood components and their function in the body.
