Simon Benson is a Senior Scientist with the Blood Service’s Transfusion Clinical Governance Unit, and based in Sydney.
I trained as a Biomedical Scientist in the UK, attaining Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science. I have worked in the national transfusion services and hospital transfusion laboratories in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.
I was involved in the development, implementation and administration of the New Zealand ‘National Haemovigilance Programme’. I have presented at various national and international meetings, and have received the ANZSBT Presidential Award at the 2006 ANZSBT annual scientific meeting.
My areas of interest include haemovigilance and error prevention, blood product inventory modelling and the interaction between blood services and the external health environment.
I am a councillor of ANZSBT, and as member of the ANZSBT ‘Transfusion Science Committee’ was on the writing group producing the 2007 ‘Guidelines for Pretransfusion Laboratory Practice’.
More recently, I am the Blood Service's representative on the Standards Australia Technical Committee responsible for reviewing AS3864 ‘Medical Refrigeration Equipment – For The Storage Of Blood And Blood Products’.
